Michael Jackson’s Memorial
Watching Michael Jackson’s Memorial LIVE at CNN at 2am, didn’t make me stop the tears from falling. I am not a hardcore MJ fan, but I grew up listening to his music, along with The Beatles. My dad was lucky enough to have seen him during their tour in the Manila when MJ was really young.
I really appreciate how the people close to Michael celebrated his life and tried their best to let the world know who he really is as a friend, brother, father, and as a humanitarian. During the service, I couldn’t help but be touched by the words of those people who shared their memorable moments with Michael.
One of the things that struck most of us is Al Sharpton’s message to Michael’s children, Prince, Paris and Blanket:
“I want his children to know there was nothing strange about your daddy, it was strange what your daddy had to deal with.”
From the outside, I have to admit that I thought Michael was strange, but now, I understand why. As Gordy mentioned, Michael has two personalities, one being the offstage Michael who is shy, and the other who is larger than life on stage, fearless. Brooke Shields mentioned that Michael loves to laugh, and they would try to compete with each other as to who can make the other one laugh the hardest.
When Paris, his daughter, spoke about how his father is the best daddy in the world since she was born, I was choked up and I cried. This shows that Michael was a fit a father, contrary to speculations that his kids are living an abnormal life. They were truly loved by the King of Pop.
This is IT. He’s really gone.
These were the songs from the memorial:
I’ll Be There by Mariah Carey and Trey Lorenz
Jesus is Love by Lionel Ritchie
Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer by Stevie Wonder
Will You Be There by Jennifer Hudson
Human Nature by John Mayer
Smile by Jermaine Jackson
Gone Too Soon by Usher
Who’s Lovin’ You? by Shaheen Jafargholi

This was touching! I didn’t get to watch it because it was really late, but I saw the videos and the snippets shown in the news, and I really wanted to cry when Michael’s daughter spoke. It was so sad. He was clearly close to his children and he was loved by them. I’m glad that the people who got to know Michael personally “reintroduced” him to the whole world and told everyone who he really was as a person. I’m also not a big fan, but now I got to appreciate him more.
